Reflection on week 4: Integration and Islamization of Curriculum



           When we studied about the integration and Islamization of curriculum; we realized that all knowledge in the world are coming from one source which is the Qur'an and the Qur'an is from Allah. In other words, wide knowledge and everything in the world are from Allah. We as human can only rent it from Allah only in a short period.
          
     Hence, this is what a true meaning of integration and Islamization. Rather than only learn the subject or knowledge, we also look at it from the Islamic perspective. What is exactly the meaning and benefit of acquiring the knowledge from the Islamic view. Therefore, as the name suggests which is International Islamic University Malaysia, our University education system makes sure that every subject will be put under one big umbrella which is Islamic perspective or way.
       
     What are we really understand about Islamic perspective? Is it just about relating the subject to Islam and it can be considered as Islamic? Not really, to really practice the idea, from what we understand are to integrate the knowledge into many branches.
              
     First, is to integrate between the subjects inter disciplinary curriculum where we organize one center or main topic and include many other related subjects under it. Second, is to integrate or determine value whether they are good or bad values. Even so, in education only good values and beneficial to human being are being taught. Third, to integrate human potentials which means the knowledge that we learn can stimulate our cognitive ('aql), affective (ruh) and psycho motor (physical) at one time. 

         The three domains must interlink for the knowledge can be really considered as beneficial to us Muslims. This is because, knowledge is just not a mere knowledge for this material world, but it is also must be a knowledge for our affective (ruh) as our preparation for the hereafter. Finally, integrate the knowledge in Tawhidic view where we put the basis of every value which is the oneness of Allah in order to Islamize the subject. This method is best achieved when we studying literature because the poets are mostly Christians; so they will tend to put the Christianity values in it. Thus, rather than we just read and accept it, we can look at it from the Islamic values.
           
        Now we understand that integration of curriculum is very important in order for us to develop the tawhidic ummah. To establish a Muslim nation like this, it has to start from education. Thus, the philosophy of it, the integration of knowledge, iman, amal and akhlak are all based on tawhid.
               
         Integration and Islamization of curriculum is also one of the ways to restore the identity of Muslims because nowadays; Muslims are losing their identity. Therefore, this Islamization is a combination of modern and traditional subjects to produce insan, kamil or a complete person. In other words, Islamization is closely related to Muslims' way of life and the knowledge that they seek.This is because, if we live our life and seek knowledge in a right way, we will achieve happiness, peace and security in this life and hereafter.
            
       Overall, integration and Islamization of curriculum is being practiced because knowledge is just knowledge if we learn it for worldly matters. However, if we seek knowledge for sake of Allah, Insyaalah the knowledge will bring benefit to us. That is why, the integration and Islamization exist.
