Reflection on week 10: Computational Stylistic
We have come to end of studying
and learning computer application. This week, our lecturer has explained us
about computational stylistics. Computer stylistics is a study of patterns
formed in particular texts, authors, genres, and periods using computational
methods. The use of computers helps to achieve more accurate on detection
explanation of linguistics patterns.
In language learning, computer
stylistics is used to determine the style of literary works such as grammar,
lexis, semantics, and phonological properties. Besides that, it is also used to
identify linguistics features such as Arbitrariness, creativity or
open-endedness and cultural transmission.
The
scope of computational stylistics is large. Firstly, computer stylistics
counts the frequency of common words and rare words, to detect writing style
and others. Secondly, it can determine the sentiment of a text whether it is
positive or negative sentiment. Thirdly, through the use of computers, we can
analysis individual style. Therefore, researches can find clues to unique
characteristics in linguistic pattern of an author. It is an interesting
subject to learn for linguistics students!
