Reflection 9: Lexicography

REFLECTION ON WEEK 9: LEXICOGRAPHY

In today's class, we were introduced with this term; lexicography. This is one of corpus linguistics' branches. As far as lexicography is concerned, we found that this has something to do with dictionary. Lexicography is best described as the study of dictionaries. Lexicography provides detailed information in term of meaning, pronunciation, synonyms, antonyms, lexical categories (noun, verb, adverb and adjectives) and examples. Dictionaries provide a useful and accessible reference resource to learners. Personally, we believed that dictionaries are student-friendly where they enable students to seek detailed information. If student wants to seek a word of stable, for instance, they simply search this word and a number of information can be seen. However, the technology's development makes learners easier in accessing data. By using computer, its enable learners to search the data without any trouble.

Throughout this class, we also learned that lexicography can be divided into two disciplines; practical lexicography and theoretical lexicography. Practical lexicography involves action of compiling, writing and editing dictionaries whereas theoretical lexicography concerns in studying of language and its vocabulary of language and develops the best method to compile dictionaries. Theoretical lexicography develops theories of the semantic and structural relationship of words used in the lexicon. A lexicon includes lexemes or minimal units, linking related forms of words in a language.Hence, the lexicon deals with the semantics of word meanings and also structural information regarding the etymology of a word.
